Mr. Supreme is one of my favorite DJs, an absolute craftsman of the art and an authority on all things soulful and funky. Here in his words, a breakdown of the 10 best in last year.
1. Various Artists “Wheedles Groove 45 Box Set”
Ok, obviously i’m slightly biased on this one since it’s my project that I compiled for Light in the Attic records. With that being said I honestly truly dig it not only for the music but for the packaging presentation and extras. Trading cards, pics and book all in one unit…
2. Elzhi “El Matic”
I heard about this project and wasn’t really interested in it. Why would I want to hear some relatively unknown mc re-do a great rappers classic album? I checked it out one day on line and let it play while getting some work done and was blown away. So well done and he is a great rapper in his own right. Love this.
3. Kon & the Gang “Sunlight”
Work from the homie Kon and i’m even friends with some of the gang! Great production, mixdown etc. This one has been on repeat since it’s release day and will be getting run years to come…
4. Krystal Klear “Tried For Your Love”
A boogie banger. This is how new music should sound! Get your roller skates out and put your short shorts on…
5. Rasheed Chappell “Future Before Nostalgia’
I’ll be honest, I stopped getting excited about hip hop music about 10 years ago. However, there is no denying just plain good music and this is just that. You can’t really lose when Kenny Dope has your back.
6. Sureshot Symphony Solution “A Good Look”
Wow! What a great project from start to finish and of course leave it up to Sureshot to come with the ill cover art…. A musical monster. Somebody please give this man a million dollars already. Maybe he’ll give me a loan…..
7. Weekend Express “Going To Chicago”
Weekend Express never disappoints. This is another dance floor gem that sounds like Giorgio Moroder or the Coach House Rhythm section could have meet up in the studio….
8. Body Language “Falling Out”
I don’t think I would dig this as an instrumental or the vocals on their own but put them together and it’s magically delicious…
9. Amy Winehouse “Lioness: Hidden Treasures”
Her life ended up being a sad story and true shame but her talent was unrivaled. So much soul! Some of these songs sound like they were done 30+ years ago…
10. Brianna Colette “In Love”
I loved this within half a second of hearing it. Smooth laid back jazzy, funky and hard hitting at the same time. Who does that?!?! So good……
